Cross country wraps up at snowy meet

Minnesota weather, famously unpredictable, gave Two Harbors and Cook County runners an additional challenge at the section meet Oct. 25.
“It was a cold, snowy, windy day,” Assistant Coach Beth Schield said.
The runners came out sluggish, according to Schield, “but, everybody had the same circumstances to run in,” she added.
The girls’ team, which had set its sights on fifth place, finished seventh, led by Cook County Sarissa Falk’s 26th place finish. The boys had a fifth place finish, led by Cook County senior Ben Seaton. No runners qualified for the state meet.
No Two Harbors boys ran in the section race, but Owen Cruikshank served as an alternate. The girls’ team included Abi Seipke and Sara Schield from Two Harbors. Seipke finished second for the team and 37th overall, while Schield came in fifth for the team and 47th overall. Ruby Wahlsberg was an alternate but didn’t run.
Seipke and Sara Schield had very strong seasons, finishing consistently well in most races. In addition, Beth Schield said all her runners improved their times significantly from last year.
“Owen and Everett (Hommes) really started dropping their times toward the end of the season. Drew (Christensen) had a great race at Proctor, Ruby had incredible improvement…and we’re really looking forward to having Jake (Paron) on the team next year. He has a lot of potential,” she said.
The awards banquet for the team is this weekend, where they will bid farewell to Falk, Seaton and Sara Schield, as well as four other Cook County seniors.
