Agate Swimmers and Divers Shine when Wet

The girls of the Agates swimming and diving team have done something that seemed nearly impossible when they started competition last fall, said coach Heather Mayfield. After losing eight seniors to graduation the previous spring, the 21-member team with 10 freshman ended its season last Thursday undefeated for a second year in a row. That’s right; they haven’t lost a meet in two years.

Although the girls are talented, Mayfield said she didn’t expect the team’s success when the season began. Instead, she said, she expected this to be a “rebuilding year” for the young team.

“It definitely seemed as if it was going to be a rebuilding year…but they started pushing themselves hard and I started pushing them harder than I had last season.” Mayfield said. The combination turned out to be the team’s ticket to victory.

The Agates closed their regular season last Thursday with a 58-36 win over Chisholm. Their next chance to shine will be in sectionals with preliminaries on Thursday and finals on Saturday.

“There is no telling how well these girls might finish off their season, said Mayfield, “ I am so excited to see how they all do. They have pushed above and beyond and are capable of just about anything.”
