The Mariners got off to a good start at their homecoming game as they led the Ely Timberwolves 15-6 following the first quarter and 15-14 at halftime. Unfortunately, there are four quarters and two halves in football and Ely outscored the Mariners 27-0 in the second half on their way to a 41-15 victory. The Mariners had 184 yards of offense in the first half and 18 in the second half. The Mariners limited the Timberwolves to one yard in the first quarter and 89 in the first half, but the Timberwolves amassed 330 yards in the second half of play.

The Mariners started out the game with a 62 yard drive that was aided by 25 yards in penalties by the Wolves. Jonah Koehler concluded the drive with a six yard run and kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead for the Mariners.

After the the Wolves went three and out, they intercepted a Mariner pass and had the ball at the Mariner one yard line. Louis Gerzin ran it in to cut the score to 7-6.The Mariner's next possession also covered 62 yards and concluded with a 23 yard touchdown pass from Luke Small to Chad Smuk.

Bradley Rowlee caught a Small pass for the two point conversion and the Mariners led 15-6.

Before the end of the half, Ely quarterback Sean Jordan hit Carter Manning with a 10 yard score and Gerzin ran in for two more to make it 15-14.The Mariners next possession saw them turning the ball over on downs at the Ely 2 yard line with 28.4 seconds left in the first half.

The second half saw the Wolves come out more inspired than the Mariners and completely dominate the second half. They completely eliminated the Mariner ground game and the majority of the Mariner offense. Jordan and Gerzin scored on short runs to make it 26-15 in favor of Ely. Jordan scrambled on a broken pass play for 35 yards and another touchdown which made the score 32-15.

After the Mariners intentionally took a safety with the punter stepping out of the end zone, the Wolves scored late in the fourth quarter on a 64 yard pass from Jordan to Mark Heiman for a final score of 41-15.

Gerzin rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolves and Jordan completed 3 of 8 throws for 88 yards and two more scores.

Koehler led the Mariners with 91 yards on the ground with Small completing 7 of 17 passes for 69 yards. Smuk and Marc Small each had 3 receptions .Eben Fischer led the Mariner defense with 16 tackles followed by Leif Maxwell with 8 and Preston Westerlund and Luke Small each with 6. Bradley Rowlee, Koehler and Luke Small each recovered a Timberwolf fumble.

Next up for the Mariners is a 3:30pm game this afternoon at Babbitt versus the Northeast Range NightHawks.

Mountain Iron-Buhl has moved to the top of the Big North Conference with a 56-22 victory over Northwoods.

The Mariners volleyball team came back from a 3-0 (18-25, 23-25 and 16-25) loss to Ely to defeat the Barnum Bombers 3-1 (25-18,23-25,25-21 & 29-27). Rebecca Dilley had 13 kills and 9 digs, Alicia Nopola contributed 13 kills and 9 blocks and Kari Smerud had 27 set assists and 4 ace serves.

The Mariners then lost a tough 3-2 match against Cromwell by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 20-25, 15-25 7 9-15.Kaelynn Lenski had 6 kills and 8 digs to go with 13 kills and 5 blocks from Alicia Nopola. Kari Smerud had 23 set assists and 9 digs.
