100 years ago, 1912

Duluth Day at the Lake County Fair was a big success with about 150 Duluthians making the trip in a special train on Saturday. The Zenith City people have nothing but the highest praise for the fair, entertainment offered and the cordiality of Two Harbors people. In addition to the train visitors, about a dozen automobiles made the trip and were met at the outskirts of town and escorted to the

grounds.

1913 Mitchell

The new Mitchell line of autos is “not meant to be sensational but it cannot be helped”. The features include: electric lights, electric starter, left side drive, levers in center, electric horn, adjustable rain vision windshield, long running boards, gas tank in rear, Turkish upholstery 11 inches deep, illuminated dash, storm curtain and dust envelope. The 5 Passenger Four is $1500, The 7 Passenger Six, $2500.

75 years ago, 1937

An appeal to all gasoline station employees in Minnesota to refuse to sell gasoline to drivers who are unmistakably intoxicated has been made. Those that refuse to sell gasoline and unofficial informers who

elect to report drunken drivers to the police when their condition which makes them a menace to life and limb on our streets and highways could assist in saving lives.

Moose tangles in rail wire

Moose are being seen daily in the vicinity of Two Harbors and Molde according to Game Warden Emil Schaffer. He was recently called to release one which became entangled in a section of railroad fencing

which it had dragged for at least three miles. The moose had broken off about 50 feet of wire which encloses the railroad right-of-way and dragged it until snubbed up by the stumps. Schaffer then had to cut the wire from the horns of the animal affecting its release.

50 years ago, 1962

Playing hide and seek with a bull moose in the timber in the Finland Air Base area will be engraved in the memory of Dick Mozetti and Jim Linschied, Silver Bay teachers who encountered the animal on a partridge hunting trip. They heard a crashing noise in the woods and a quick look through the underbrush disclosed the huge animal. After yelling in an attempt to scare the moose away, Mozetti ran behind a small tree and fired a shot over its head. The moose then took after Linschied. The moose was only about 10 feet from Linschied who turned and fired another shot into the air. At that juncture the moose stopped and then veered off into the woods.

Letter-writing promotion

Oct. 7-13 has been designated by the Post Office Department as “letter writing week,” Harold Olson, Two Harbors postmaster reminded patrons today. This is the 25th such event which is inaugurated to promote friendship and better understanding among all peoples. He urged everyone to communicate to friends, relatives and acquaintances in this country and overseas as often as possible.

25 years ago, 1987

The first week of October was a record week for tourism in Lake County. The information centers had 1,311 visitors, a 100-percent increase over last year. Most visitors wanted to see our first snowfall and enjoy the turning leaves. In September our centers had 8,676 visitors compared to 2,179 last year, a 298-percent increase.

Go take a hike

Saturday, Oct. 10, the Superior Hiking Trail association is holding its first annual Fall Hike. Starting at the Temperance River State Park, the hike from the trail head back to the Temperance River will be a five mile section of the trail constructed this summer leading hikers to the top of Carlton Peak, one of the premier vistas along the North Shore.
