In a discovery that Minnesota conservation officers said they couldn’t believe, a shopping cart completely covered in zebra mussels was found in the back of a pickup truck in a Two Harbors parking lot recently. Driver Bruce A. Hinsverk, 51, of Wahpeton, N.D., told officers he saw the shopping cart next to two dumpsters on the Duluth waterfront and thought it would be cool to have on display at his hair salon, according to the officers, and said he didn’t know is that it’s against the law to transport or possess even one zebra mussel. Hinsverk, who could not be reached for comment, was cited for unlawfully possessing or transporting a prohibited invasive species and given instructions on how to appeal the charge or pay a $500 fine.
