100 years ago, 1912

The boosters for the Sixth Annual Lake County Fair met with great success in the sale of tickets in Duluth for the fair and a large crowd is expected from that city next Saturday, this being the result of an exchange of boosters between cities. Last Saturday was Two Harbors Day in Duluth when the boosters from the Lake county metropolis were there in force as fore-runners of the county fair encouraging attendance and welcoming a chance to meet and greet those of our fair city.

Free flour at the fair

Bring a loaf of bread to the County Fair Saturday morning made out of Duluth Universal Flour and get one 98 lb. sack of flour free, if it is best. One 49 lb. sack free if it is the second best; one 24 lb. sack free if it is third best loaf.

75 years ago, 1937

A miniature cyclone was witnessed Sunday at Stewart Lake by several Two Harbors people who spent the weekend there. The roof was taken off Fritz Temme’s cabin and a wheelbarrow standing in the yard was raised 50 feet in the air and dropped between the cars of Fritz Temme and Carl Martin parked in the yard. A Chick Sale creation also was raised in the air 35 feet and dropped, a total loss.

Partridges break windows

It is rather extraordinary to record the breaking of a window in a home in the city by a partridge, but to record two such incidents may strain the credence of Chronicle readers. Mrs. Irwin Hillman was startled by the sound of broken glass in her bedroom and scared nearly to death by the noise of something fluttering about the room. A partridge, unhurt by its impact, was found. On the following day Mrs. Ann Schreiner had a somewhat similar experience when another partridge flew through a window in her home.

50 years ago, 1962

News of approval for a grant of $98,560 for construction of a new elementary school at Finland brought an impetus to plans for the structure which may be completed in time for the next school term, according to superintendent, Ray Stensvad. The building will house 5 classrooms and a large all-purpose room. The present school in Finland is a two-room frame structure.

Two join famous song groups

Mary House, a 1961 graduate from Two Harbors High School, has been selected as a member of the world famous Concordia College as one of 65 selected from some 500 candidates. The group each year makes a world tour. Allen Olson, a 1962 graduate of THHS, is a member of the famed Blue Jackets Navy Choir at Great Lakes, Ill., also taking part in highly competitive tryouts before his selection.

25 years ago, 1987

Organizers for the January races are already beginning with two races in the marathon group. The new 130- mile dash down the shore from Grand Marais to Two Harbors, will be added to the Sled Dog Marathon with organizers looking for merchants, volunteers and donations.
