Sports roundup: Sept. 28

Cross country

From Chris Hegg, Vikings Cross Country assistant coach

Our eight vehicles, 30 high school racers and 15 coaches and parents looked like a pretty good-sized caravan going down I-35. But we were just a fly on the back of a buffalo when we arrived at the 5,600-racer, 300-team Milaca MegaMeet. The weather was perfect for running, hundreds of team tents were up, the music was blaring and thousands of kids were roaming around the Stone’s Throw Golf Course.

We had most of our kids entered in the Varsity and JV races that started around noon, but we had some very competitive runners in the girls’ eighth grade race and the boys’ seventh grade race. Jake Paron’s 12:52, 30th place finish in the seventh grade boys’ race was very strong.

We’ve been very optimistic about our varsity girls. They have been on a roll after a great summer training effort. Senior Sara Schield of Two Harbors improved on her best, running 17:19 for the 2.5-mile course and placing 91st. Abi Seipke ran to a personal best of 17:23. Two Harbors resident Ruby Walsberg finished with a 19:27.

As a team, the girls finished 15th.

The junior varsity races are always the biggest spectacle at Milaca, and this year was no different. Both the boys and girls races had 500 competitors. Owen Cruikshank improved by three minutes to run 21:12 and Drew Christensen finished 21:25. Everett Hommes ran a 23:08. As a bonus, the boys finished 39th of 54 A & AA JV teams.

The grand finale of the meet is the “Old Timers” race for runners over 18. This year we had a big Viking contingent in the 150-plus field of runners. Recent Viking alumni and collegiate runners Dan and Anna Schield, joined legitimate old timers Mark Falk, Treg Axtell, Dave Seaton, Beth Schield and me in the 2-mile course. Dan bolted ahead and out-classed us in 12:30. I hung on to Anna as we ran 13:09 and 13:15. Dave Seaton ran 14:04. Ultra trail runner Mark Falk ran his first short race in 14:41 –“back to the long runs” I heard him say. Beth led the old-time ladies in 16:08, while Treg Axtell finished in 16:21. My standing offer of a Dairy Queen to any Viking junior high runner who beat my time is due to Jake. It seems to cost me more with each passing year.

Next up for the team is the Hibbing Rotary Invitational Thursday, Sept. 27.

This piece was edited from Hegg’s original to feature Two Harbors runners. The News-Chronicle incorrectly stated that the team is a co-op between Cook County and Lake County; it is actually a co-op between Cook County and Two Harbors.

Two Harbors football

The Agates traveled to Esko last Friday and came out with a 36-0 loss.

Sophomore quarterback Kyler Kinn completed nine of 13 passes for 115 yards, and rushed one time for 10 yards to lead the Agates offense. Kempffer led the Agates in receiving with four catches for 56 yards. Senior linebacker Austyn Wasko had nine tackles, and senior Skylar Lysaker added seven to lead the Agates defense. Coach Tom Nelson said that it boiled down to Esko wanting it a lot more than his team. Coach Nelson stated that he was very disappointed with his team’s effort and energy as it was very lackluster. One bright spot offensively was Kyler Kinn as he was able to throw for over 100 yards and made some good decisions with his passes. Pictures, left. The Agates continue to be shorthanded due to injuries but may begin to get some players back for the homecoming game against Evelth-Gilbert next week. The Agates face Moose Lake/Willow River this Friday at home.

Two Harbors volleyball

Two Harbors volleyball lost to Moose Lake Willow River on Sept. 20 in three sets, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-21.
