DNR Report: Sept. 21

Reports filed Sunday by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers.

Conservation Officer John Velsvaag (Ely) checked anglers and grouse hunters this past weekend. Grouse hunting success was slow in the Ely area. Velsvaag took enforcement action after a complaint of a boat without lights was reported. The operator had been cited for the same offense within the past several weeks. Velsvaag also took several nuisance animal complaints and gave the law enforcement portion of the moose orientation for the moose hunters.

Conservation Officer Marty Stage (Ely) worked the opening grouse and archery seasons, dealt with road- killed animals, and assisted with traffic control at a car accident. Moose orientation class was conducted in Ely for successful moose license applicants. Stage also investigated a big game case in the BWCA. Fishing has been a little slow and the leaves are turning colors.People are reminded that even though there are a lot of deer hit each year on the highways, there is still a process that must be followed in order to keep the deer. Failure to notify an officer or dispatch center will result in enforcement action being taken.

Conservation Officer Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reported that not many grouse hunters are out and not many grouse have been seen during the small game opener. Many people decided to get that boat out one more time instead. Fagerman took an arson team callout to investigate a fire in northwest Minnesota. Enforcement action was taken for young children on an all-terrain vehicle without helmets, taking bears in wrong zone, failure to register bears, bear guide violations and failure to register bear within 48 hours.

Conservation Officer Mary Manning (Hovland) spent a busy weekend checking grouse and bear hunters; birds were hard to come by for most. The officer checked anglers fishing for salmon on Lake Superior tributaries. Manning also patrolled state parks, wilderness management areas, answered phone calls, and caught up on paperwork.

•••

Conservation Officer Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) followed up on bear hunting investigations, bear hunters and checked bear bait stations. Wahlstrom finished up on a detail working a fire and checkedsmall game hunters.

•••

Conservation Officer Brad Johnson (Silver Bay) reported that he worked the small game opener checking grouse hunters. He also checked ATV’s on local trails, and anglers on Lake Superior. Johnson patrolled at several state parks along the north shore.

•••

Sergeant Keith Olson (Lake Superior Marine Unit) checked bear hunters inland. Pink salmon are showing up in the rivers farther up the shore. Olson met with U.S. Coast Guard on a recent Incident Command System exercise and assisted Officer Hanzal inland. Olson also checked boaters on Lake Superior.

•••

Conservation Officer Matt Miller (Lake Superior Marine Unit) checked anglers and boaters on Lake Superior and attended the Area Maritime Security Committee meeting. Miller assisted the Parks & Trails Division with a videography project on the Lake Superior Water Trail. Commercial and charter enforcement issues were handled. Enforcement action was taken forcommercial, angling, and ATV violations.

•••

Conservation Officer Troy Ter Meer (Marine Unit) worked angling, aquatic invasive species, commercial, ATV, small game, and archery deer enforcement throughout the week. Enforcement action was taken angling, commercial, AIS, boating, and firearm transport violations.
