Sports roundup: Sept. 21

Swimming

The Agates swim team traveled to Lincoln Park Middle School for the Soderlind Invitational on Sept. 15. They won the meet and set a number of pool records at the new pool.

“It was such an amazing moment for the whole team, I was so proud of them. I even had girls come up to me after the meet and thank me for the hard practices. I never thought I would hear those words! They are all starting to realize what all that hard work is for and these are those moments that make every one of those hard workouts worth it,” head coach Heather Mayfield said.

The girls competed again on Tuesday against Cloquet-Esko-Carlton. They maintained their undefeated record, beating CEC 108-61. The Agates won every event except one.

Two Harbors football

The Agates played the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers on Sept. 14. The final score was Duluth Marshall 29, Two Harbors 13

Junior running back Mike Nordean rushed 21 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Agates offense. Defensively, senior linebacker Austyn Wasko led the Agates with 12 tackles. Junior defensive end Mark Pearson had 11 tackles, senior safety Skylar Lysaker added nine tackles and senior defensive end Bryan Deming had eight tackles. Sophomore defensive back Kyler Kinn intercepted a Duluth Marshall pass in the second quarter which lead to Nordean's first touchdown run three plays later.

“Duluth Marshall has a much improved squad as they returned quite a few players from last year and they are hungry to win. I thought that the thing that hurt us the worst was our inconsistency,” head coach Tom Nelson said. “Our youth along with the injury bug just keep coming back to bite us. I believe, in the long run, our young kids are going to benefit from all of the time they are getting, but it is making it tough to win games now….we have to keep working to find a way.”

The junior varsity had a 36-6 victory over Mesabi East this week. The junior high team is 2-1 with very nice numbers: 18 eighth graders and 17 seventh graders are out for football. There are 22 pony football players (grades 5 and 6) and nearly 50 Flag Football players (grades K-4).

Cross country

The Vikings, a team consisting of Cook County and Lake County runners, headed to Eveleth on Sep. 13 for the Eveleth Invitational. All of the Section 7A teams, except Esko and Crosby-Ironton were there, plus Section 8 powerhouse Pequot Lakes.

The Vikings team has improved significantly since last year, with the first girl finisher completing the race two minutes faster than its best runner last year. The girls’ team finished fourth of 18. The boys also did well, with the team placing sixth, beating four teams that had placed ahead of them at last year’s Section 7A finals.

Lake County athletes who competed did well in the races.

Sara Schield and Abby Seipke finished in a pack with two other girls, taking 29th, 30th, 32nd and 33rd place and finishing the 5-kilometer course with times between 18:08 and 18:16.

Drew Christensen, Everett Hommes and Owen Cruikshank ran for the junior varsity squad in the race.

Seventh grader Jake Paron was the only junior high boy, but he ran well and finished 26th in the 111-runner field at 9:41 for the 1.2 mile run. Ruby Walsberg led the junior high girls, placing 20th in 11:03.

Two Harbors volleyball

The Agates lost in five sets to Floodwood on Sept. 18. According to Jill Innis, the teams were evenly matched and the Agates played their hearts out.
