Silver Bay received the opening kickoff and started out at their own 40 yard line. Five plays later they scored on a nine yard run by Kyle Blood to take a 6-0 lead in the game against the Northwoods Grizzlies at Cook. It would be the last lead of the game for the Mariners as Northwoods tied it up on their first possession and scored the next 50 points in the contest. Northwoods won with a 56-20 victory.
A 41 yard run by Jaret Sandberg and one of 52 yards by Bryan Linn made it 14-6.The Mariners still had a somewhat realistic chance late in the first half with the score at 28-6. The Grizzlies then scored on a 56 yard pass from Hank Halverson to Travis Hooper. Hooper later returned the second half kickoff 90 yards for another score to remove any doubt.
The Mariners scored two more times after the Grizzlies had removed most of their starters from the game. Jonah Koehler ran one in from 15 yards out and Luke Small scored on a run of 6 yards. Blood ran for the two point conversion.
The Mariners were hurt by numerous mistakes and a lack of speed. The Grizzlies ran for 415 yards and completed one pass for 56, while the Mariners ran for 191 and had 82 yards passing.
Jonah Koehler finished with 114 yards rushing for the Mariners. Luke Small had 45 on the ground and was 7 of 11 for 82 yards passing. Kyle Blood and Preston Westerlund each had six tackles for the Mariners. Bradley Rowlee had an interception and Luke Small blocked a punt.
Northwoods was ranked number seven in nine man football in the state going into the game and the Mariners were ranked tenth. Northwoods is probably toughest opponent on the Mariners’ schedule this season.
The Mariner volleyball team put one in the win column with a 3-0 victory at Moose Lake. They prevailed by a score of 25-21, 25-20 and 26-24. Alicia Nopola has 8 kills and 5 ace serves with Rebecca Dilley getting 7 kills and 4 ace serves. Kari Smrud had 18 set assists and 8 digs. Later the girls fell 12-25,18-25 and 21-25 to South Ridge. Alicia Nopola had 6 kills and 4 blocks with Kari Smerud getting 10 set assists.
The football team hosts the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers this evening at 7pm.The volleyball team hosts Wrenshall on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm.
