Girls soccer team is learning quickly

On Friday, the Agates girls’ soccer team played the Academy of Holy Angels team on their home turf.
The girls played well in the first half, keeping the game close. They started the second half losing only 0-1. However, the girls tired and fell apart in the second half, giving up nine goals to the hard-kicking Angels.
Tuesday, the team played at Hermantown. They came away with another loss but scored their first goal of the season. Rather, they scored their first goal against an opposing team, clarified head coach Jeff Peterson with a laugh. Two goals have been scored against Two Harbors after the ball grazed a member of their team before going in the net. Despite the early disappointments, the team is working hard and still smiling.
“We’re a younger team with a lot of kids that haven’t played together before, but their attitude is great,” Peterson said.
Eight senior starters graduated last year and with no juniors playing this year, it’s certainly a young team.
Three senior captains, Michaela Campbell, Amanda Laine and Abby Cable are leading the team. Five more seniors round out the older players—Whitney Wasko, Jenny Grignon, Madisen Stroozas, Courtney Osbakken and Hannah Spiering Broadbent.
“We’ve got a strong lineup of seniors,” Peterson said.
The remaining players are all sophomores or freshmen. Peterson identified sophomore goalie Sam Dewey and freshman defender Errika Furo as up-and-coming talent on the team. Dewey has played particularly well and kept the team in a lot of games, he said.
“What she lacks in height she makes up for with athleticism. She’s really fun to watch. Almost every coach we’ve played against compliments her,” Peterson said.
Peterson pointed to nagging injuries and a rigorous schedule as the main reasons for the rough start to the season—the Agates already have four losses under their belts and no wins yet.
The JV team has been playing well, Peterson said. They shut out Grand Rapids last Wednesday 1-0 and played a fierce game against Hermantown Tuesday, though they lost.
Stay tuned as the lady Agates solidify their lineup and gain experience each game.
“I’m very optimistic. This is really a fun team and we’ve improved quite a bit already,” Peterson said.
