Two local teams picked up their paddles and participated in the Dragon Boat Festival last weekend. The North Shore Rotary Club and Ecumen Scenic Shores Care Center both challenged the waves in the fundraising event, finishing 20 and 35, respectively.
The event raises money for Rotary International, a service organization, and another chosen charity. Each dragon boat team raises money to participate—the first $800 was donated to Rotary and this year, and money raised over that went to Essentia Health Foundation for Cancer Research.
“We did better than we thought we would ever do,” Terri-Lee Lanigan, captain of the Ecumen team, said.
The Ecumen team was comprised of novices to the sport of dragon boat racing— only one member had been in a similar race, but it was seven years before.
The North Shore Rotary club has participated for a number of years.
The 21-member teams complete a 450-meter straight stretch off of Barker’s Island at least two times. If they advance to the finals, they race a third time. Ecumen was in the silver division finals, where they placed third.
“At the end of the race, my fingertips were tingling,” Lanigan said. “It was exhausting.”
In total, Ecumen raised $930.
