Golfers came out and took to the links at Lakeview National Golf Course for North Shore Horizons’ first annual golf scramble. Proceeds from the scramble will support services and programs offered by the organization to victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Last year North Shore Horizons served over 250 people in Lake County. In addition to a 24-hour crisis line, intervention, legal advocacy and violence prevention education, they also have 9 units of transitional and permanent supportive housing. In the works is a Section 8 based unit as well, said Tara Golden, executive director of North Shore Horizons.
The needs of women and children leaving abusive situations are many. Community members who missed the golf scramble can help by donating basics. “There used to be Welcome Wagon and people would get a basket of things-- of basics. When people go to the food shelf, they need a can opener to open the cans of food. They need laundry soap, cleaning supplies, pots and pans,” said Golden. There’s also a list of needed items on a web page and on Facebook.
Gently used items and clothing are often needed, but Golden asks that community members call North Shore Horizons first, since storage space is limited. Items can also be donated to Neighbor to Neighbor on First Avenue in Two Harbors where women being served by North Shore Horizons may be referred to pick up items they need.
