Eugene E. Kentala, 88, of Silver Bay, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and loved ones, on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012.

Eugene E. Kentala, 88, of Silver Bay, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and loved ones, on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012.

He was born March 2, 1924, to Oscar and Sylvia (Paavola) Kentala in Iron Belt, Wis. Eugene was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the Army Americal Division. Then, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served for over 20 years. Eugene worked for 18 years for the City of Silver Bay Street Department. He was a member and volunteer at the Silver Bay Golf Course. Eugene was also a member of the VFW and Air Force Sergeants Association, and religiously played morning cribbage at the Silver Bay Lounge.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Kentala; and sister, Irma Lang.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ann (Betzler); five daughters, Jean (John) Ehlers, Jo (William) Jones, Julie Jensen, June (David) Talus, and Janey (Dale) Knaffla; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanette Garcia; and sisters-in-law, Violet Theile, Jenny Hanson, and Karen Rautio.
