SBA money available for flood victims
The Small Business Administration declared the region affected by the flood a disaster area. This means residences or business in Lake County who were affected by the flood are eligible for financial assistance. Applications are available at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. A disaster loan center will be open at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center until Aug. 29 where individuals can apply. The hours are 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25.
This is the first step for anyone looking for assistance. There may be other programs those affected qualify for, but all applicants must start here.
DNR encourages hunters to apply early for deer and wolf permits
Hunters who have yet to apply for an either-sex deer permit are encouraged to do so well before the Sept. 6 deadline.
Nearly half of the state's deer permit areas are lottery areas now, which means hunters must apply for and be selected to receive a permit that allows them to shoot antlerless deer in lottery areas.
In Lake County, areas 118 (north and west of Babbit) and 122 (Brimson area) are lottery areas this year. Specific boundaries can be found on the DNR website, listed below.
Hunters can register for the deer hunt at Beaver Bay Sport Shop, Finland Bait, Maple Grove Motel & Bait Shop in Finland, Wildhurst Lodge Campgrounds in Finland, Knotted Pine Inn & Tavern in Isabella, Holiday #362 in Two Harbors and the Two Harbors Little Store.
Hunters already have applied for more than half of the licenses available in each of the three wolf hunting seasons to be conducted this fall and winter. Applying early allows time for hunters to gather information needed for applications. Early application also helps reduce long lines and bottlenecks that can occur when hunters apply at the last minute.

Chamber welcomes new members
The Two Harbors Area Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed two new members from Knife River.
The Great Lakes Candy Kitchen has been open for five years and is owned by Pam and Dennis Matson. They are the third generation of their family to work in the candy business.
The Knife River Campground which has been operating for close to 60 years, was started as a motel by Art and Helen Meriam in 1954 and renamed the Knife River Campground in 2003.
Cloquet Valley initiative wants broadband for rural townships
Alden, Ault, Fairbanks, Gnesen, Normanna, North Star and Pequayan townships have formed a joint powers board to find a way to bring high speed broadband internet service to residents. The project is called the Cloquet Valley Internet Initiative.
CVII conducted a survey of residents and found that many are dissatisfied with current service and interested in better services. Now, the CVII is conducting two feasibility studies. One will analyze all potential internet providers, including wired and wireless sources. The second will examine the engineering and business infrastructure and the costs of a potential project.
The studies were funded by grants from the Blandin Foundation and AgStar Financial Services. Matching funds were made available from a partnership between St. Louis and Lake Counties.
North Shore Horizons receives grant
Fond-du-Luth Casino Player’s Club members donated 24,334 player’s points to North Shore Horizons to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Lake County.
The money was raised as a part of the casino’s Make It a Point to Give drive, where player’s club members could donate their points to an organization and Fond-du-Luth would match the donation.
In total, North Shore Horizons received $1,622.
