Get well wishes go out to Mike Nikula who is recovering from recent surgery.

Ed Shaffer of St. Louis spent some time here visiting with his sister and brother-in-law, Millie and Clarence Goette. While here he also got a chance to visit with many friends, relatives and old classmates.

Deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Anetta Moen. Anetta died at the age of 88 in Ely. She had been a former area resident here for many years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Sunset Room at Grand Ely Lodge.

Shirley Beck died on Friday, Aug. 10 in St. Luke’s Hospital at the age of 75. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Zion Lutheran Church. Deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Shirley.

Birthday wishes go out to Carol Holden who turned 90. A party was held in her honor on Saturday at the Clair Nelson Center.

Birthday greetings also go out to Terry (Mouse) Thompson who is turning the big 60. A party was held in his honor at Nine Mile on Saturday.

There was plenty of beautiful weather for the Finnish Tori Festival which was held on Saturday at the Finland Heritage Site. Many crafters were on hand and good music throughout the day.

Finland Fire and Rescue was also on hand giving educational handouts and prizes to the children and demonstrating their turnout gear. Winners of the Firemen’s drawings were William Ahlbeck and Dale Dickinson, who each receiving a smoke detector and Chuckie Knudson winning a fire extinguisher.

Winners of the Finland Historical Society Raffle were Helene Heppala ($500), Carol Hallin ($400), Jack Pichotta ($300) and Jim Gumtow ($200). The $100 prizes went to Shirley Nelson, Jean Cook, Gary Younquist and Bev Yoki. Congratulations to the winners. Thank you to everyone that supported this raffle.

Josh and Julie Arnold of Waconia spent the weekend visiting with family and to attend the Tori. Julie did face painting and Josh also had a craft table.

Jim and Donna Branca motored up to take in the Tori as well and visit with many family and friends that were also here visiting this summer.

Pat and Lori Driscoll were also here this past weekend visiting family and helping out with the Tori.

Check out the First Annual Friends of Charlie Dog Fair Show which will be held this Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Trestle Inn. Proceeds from this year will go to the Central Minnesota Animal Care and Control. Bring out your doggie and support this fun event.
