The Two Harbors City Council Met Monday, Aug. 13. The agenda was light.

The campground project at Burlington Bay has been shelved until spring. Bids came back higher than expected and higher bids mean that only some of the work on the project could be completed for the budgeted price.

Denny Reagan, of SEH, the company selected to provide engineering services to Two Harbors, recommended that the city wait until spring to rebid the project, which could buy the city some time to come up with additional funds. Councilor Steve Detlefson recommended that the bidding remain open for a longer period of time next time. Some contractors didn’t bid on the job due to the narrow window given to submit bids, he said.

The Public Works Department is busy resurfacing streets and three slabs for benches have been poured in Van Hoven Park. There has been a request for “children playing” signs to be placed on 8th Ave.

The equipment for the new skate park has arrived and is in good condition, Mayor Randy Bolen reported, and it will be used for the Two Harbors Block Party to provide recreational options to teens who attend. The ordinance banning skateboarding downtown will have to be temporarily lifted for the event, he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard will dock its cutter, the Sundew, next to the Edna G. in Two Harbors the weekend of Sept. 6-9. That weekend, Two Harbors will also host the North Shore Classic Car Show and Camp-Out. Hundreds of classic cars will be in town along with car owners and enthusiasts. The group requested some road closings for the event and permission to have a fireworks display. A licensed pyrotechnics expert will handle the fireworks. The city will permit a fireworks display only if the pyrotechnics company has insurance to protect the city of Two harbors from liability in case of accident.

Councilor Seth McDonald reported that the trip to the Oshkosh Air Show was a success. The purpose of the trip was to promote the Two Harbors area as a business and tourist destination and to promote the airport. McDonald said that the trip was “well worth the time.”
