Letter to the editor: Thank you, Lake Co. officials
By: Louise and Ron Thureen, Two Harbors, Lake County News Chronicle
Less than a century ago town residents and businesses, farmers and ranchers all over American were overjoyed and expectant as the federal government initiated a program called the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). The reason why the government did this was because private businesses said it was too expensive a project to undertake.
The government project helped to expand businesses and communities, made nearly instant communications possible, brought safe lighting to homes, schools hospitals and merchants and lo and behold…helped create jobs. Today, we in Lake County have electricity because of this government initiative.
So much for the argument that government has no business being involved with...well, BUSINESS.
There has been ample opportunity for private enterprise to recognize that rural America needs to be included in, and connected to the modern day information systems so essential for communications, education, health, effective operation if government and business. But here in Lake County, private enterprise deemed it too expensive a project to undertake.
So, hats off to and many thanks to our Lake County officials who saw and understood this great need, and had the courage to step forward and do something about it. When this fiber optic project is completed, Lake County residents, businesses and government entities will ALL have access to the wider-world.
