Library News: Aug. 3
By: From Becky Norlein and Chris Ostby, Lake County News Chronicle
On Monday, August 6, The Two Harbors Public Library will be hosting two presenters on South Korea
The first presenter is Molly Guiney, a 2012 Two Harbors High School graduate, who will present her documentary on the Kwangju Massacre in South Korea, which advanced from the regional History Day Competition to place fourth in the State History Day Competition.
The second presenter is Fran Kaliher, a local who has been on multiple trips to South Korea and who will share her experiences, especially those regarding the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) acting as a de facto wildlife refuge.
Wednesday, August 8 at 6:30 p.m., Dean Hovey will talk about his latest book "Whistling Pines." Because it is set in Two Harbors, readers will recognize places such as the Two Harbors Golf Course/Curling Club, Hugo's Bar, Betty's Pies, and The American Legion Hall.
The mystery is who killed Axel Olson, found dead in his Whistling Pines senior apartment. There is no shortage of suspects or motives. Axel's claim of being a war hero comes quickly into question and his shady money making schemes are exceeded only by the number of people he's crossed or cheated.
The author of two previous mysteries, Hovey has been described as an author who "brings Minnesota natural history and local culture to his books like Tony Hillerman does for the Arizona Navajo reservation." This Friends of the Library program is free.
Thursday, August 9 will be the last day to turn in entries for the prize drawings for Summer Reading at Two Harbors Public Library. The party for the children's "Dream Big--Read!" program will be at 1 pm on August 9, featuring a visit from the Zoomobile, snacks, and prize drawings.
Besides the scooter, Lego set, geode kit, and World Wildlife animal adoption main prizes, there will be many additional prizes related to the night-time theme.
The Teen program "Own the Night" will have a party with a Hunger Games theme that will be held August 31, delayed so a special movie will be available. A drawing will be held soon after August 9th for the prize sets with Hunger Games, Anime, and Camping Out themes, and for additional prizes.
The adult program, "Between the Covers" will end with a Bananagrams party at from 6:30 to 7:30 on August 9. Bananagrams is a fast-paced, fun word game. This chance to try out Bananagrams is open to anyone, not just those who signed up for Summer Reading. There will also be the drawing for prizes, with the grand prize being a night's stay at the Lighthouse B&B, donated by the Lake County Historical Society.
Incentive prizes given out during the summer for children and teens included treat certificates donated by McDonald's and Dairy Queen and toys donated by The Lake Bank.
All of the other prizes were donated by the Friends of the Library, including a generous gift to the World Wildlife Fund for tokens put in by children who wanted to make a donation instead of claiming a prize.
For all three programs, prize winners do not need to be present to win. The lists of titles read and comments for the teen and adult programs will remain available at the desk after the programs end.
