By Wednesday Aug. 8, an iconic water tower in Two Harbors will be no longer.

As part of a booster station upgrade, the silver tower near Paul Antonich soccer field emblazoned with the name of the town will be demolished.

The new tower has already been built. It stands in the industrial park bearing the Two Harbors city motto “It all starts here.”

Luke Heikkila, the superintendent at the city water and light department, said the new water tower is more than enough to handle the needs of the city.

“The new one is 1.25 million gallons and the old one coming down is 1 million,” he said.

The group doing the demolition, Iseler Demolition Inc., will start stabilizing the tower on Monday, Aug. 6, to ensure a safer demolition process, and the tower should be down by Aug. 8.

“The neat thing about them is that [Isler Demolition, Inc.] use all local supplies,” Heikkila said. The company is based out of Port Hope, Mich. but they rent and buy necessary supplies in the communities where they’re working, Heikkila said.

The booster station upgrade, which included the construction of the new water tower, the demolition of the old one and a few smaller projects, came with a price tag of $1.8 million. The demolition accounts for $64,700 of that amount.
