Bay to Bay 10k race results

The Bay to Bay 10k Run and Walk continues to grow. This year 142 walkers and runners tackled the challenging course, which includes many rocky climbs on the Superior Hiking Trail and spectacular views of the North Shore.

Melissa Varpness, 21, of Minneapolis was the first woman to finish and second overall with a time of 50:25, the highest overall place for a woman in the race’s history. She also broke the women’s course record by .2 seconds.

The overall winner was Max Riederer, 16, who traveled from Brookfield, Wash. for the race. He finished with a strong lead and a time of 47:28.

The oldest runner was Arnold Overby, 78, of Beaver Bay.

The youngest was Justin Niederhaus, 12, of Haulostubt, Ind. Niederhaus was part of a group of young runners from Indiana who travel to the North Shore each summer to run the race.

Lisa Topp won the race-walk division, with a time of 1:28:16. She has won the race-walk every year since 2007.

The race was organized by Tom Clifford and George Pope.
