100 years ago, 1912

Off the rails

Duluth & Iron Range passenger train No. 1, due out of here at 3:50 p.m. was seriously delayed at Larsmont on account of being off the track and did not arrive here until 6:50 thus delaying the south-bound train as well. A journal on the rear trucks of the baggage car broke and derailed the truck.

75 years ago, 1937

Tourists swelled the throng which witnessed the most successful Fourth of July celebration in the 19 years the Oscar Anderson post of the American Legion has conducted the event. Tourists not only enjoyed the festivities Two Harbors had to offer but also a relief from the heat of southern areas including Iowa, where the temperature has reached as high as 106 in the shade. A great Fourth was enjoyed by all.

Drug trade

Representatives of the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy wish to inform the public of the fact that restaurants, pool halls and general merchandise store owners often sell some drugs which are prohibited from sale by any other than a registered pharmacist. Among those drugs are: aspirin tablets, milk of magnesia, aromatic cascara and spirits of camphor.

50 years ago, 1962

The first in a planned series of oral polio vaccine treatments in the northern part of Lake County was an outstanding success with a total of 2,500 persons receiving treatment for the prevention of the disease.

High education costs

Robert Falk, associate director of student personnel and instructor in psychology at the University of Minnesota Duluth, was the guest speaker at the Rotary noon luncheon. He spoke of the changing needs of education and the costs of today. In 1941 the tuition for one quarter was $10, today it is $80. Activities fee was $4.50 and today it is $8. In 1941 the school had 734 students, while this fall they will have 2,900.

25 years ago, 1987

Minnesota motorists and tourists will find statewide gas prices up an average of four cents a gallon since mid-May. Average self-service prices for a gallon of regular is 98 cents.

The Place in place

The Place occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of many Two Harbors kids. Sharing the Two Harbors Community Center with seniors, the Place offers kids a place to play foosball, ping pong, pool and to have dances.
