The forecast for Saturday calls for sunshine, a fitting complement to performer Dave Herzog and his Island Time Band, a self-described "Caribbean party."
The band will perform twice on the Heritage Days Stage near the community center. Herzog has been performing on the steel drum for more than 15 years and will be joined by a guitarist/vocalist.
“We always say, you can come to the gig in a bad mood, but you can’t leave in one,” Herzog said.
The music fits into the theme of this year’s festival, “Luau by the Lake.”
Herzog’s island attitude comes from years spent in the tropics. Herzog and his wife sold their home 12 years ago, bought a sailboat, and took a trip to Key West. That trip turned into something more permanent – the two now call Key West their home for seven months per year. The other five months they spend in Minnesota. Though his music is inspired by tropical climates and popular Key West events, he is still a hit in Minnesota venues.
“Everyone loved the music and it was a nice touch for our guests,” said one Minnesota bride in a review on Herzog’s website.
“Probably the most fun I have is playing up here in Minnesota,” he said. “They only have, like, eight weeks of summer, so they’ll be in their coats partying.”
One of Herzog’s favorite performances involved a chill in the tropics. At a Weather Channel Christmas event in Key West in 2008, the network shipped a trailer full of ice and a snowmaking machine to the house where Herzog was performing. They built a pile of snow next to the outdoor pool, turned on the show machine and celebrated a white Christmas in the tropics.
“It’s never snowed in Key West except for that day,” Herzog said.
Although snow is not in the program this time, Herzog will be bringing his vibe to the Heritage Days Stage at 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.
