100 years ago, 1912
After being discontinued for some time, the practice of blowing the pumping station siren as a curfew at 9 o’clock in the evening was resumed Monday. Now if the children can be induced to have some respect to the ordinance, it will be a good thing.
Get the flies
In light of the findings that houseflies carry disease and cause death, the fly-killing contest announced in the schools will begin Monday morning, June 24th, and close Monday evening July 1st. All who desire to enter this contest must report at the Public Library so that they may receive their numbers.
75 years ago, 1937
A concerted effort will be made in Two Harbors to enroll every motorist in the new safety program. A membership emblem which will be given bears an outline map of Minnesota and is intended to be placed on the rear side windows of vehicles or windows of business places. The fee of 25 cents for two years will be divided equally between the Minnesota Safety committee and the Lake county committee.
Church is 50
The first church erected by the Presbyterians in Two Harbors was built in 1888 and cost but $1,200 with a seating capacity of 120. In 1900 it was remodeled to provide room for the growing congregation and served its congregation until another remodel in 1906 when the structure of brownstone was erected at a cost of $15,000. A two-day celebration to mark the golden jubilee will begin Saturday.
50 years ago, 1962
There has been a tremendous growth in insurance vending machines at air terminals, rail and bus depots and for a few quarters you can pick up all the protection you think you need for the duration of your trip. According to the column “Jottings by Jim” that does not seem to be the optimistic way of taking a trip but thousands of people jam quarters into the machines every day.
25 years ago, 1987
Anna Rossi wasn’t sure at first just what came crashing through her window at Lake View Memorial Nursing Care Unit but the fast action of staff and pure luck resulted in no injuries when a deer ran through a closed and curtained window, down the hallways and finally out an open door. Staff were quick to close residents’ doors so the frightened deer wouldn’t enter and five staff members had to hold the lobby door closed to keep the deer in the hallways until it found an exit.
Rush for racers
Pushing to open all 100 rooms at the new Superior Shores Lodge, Mark Pearson admits that the schedule proved to be a bit ambitious but 70 rooms on the top two floors of the three-floor lodge will be open Friday evening.
