A new radio station for Two Harbors?
Some area residents exploring the possibility of starting a low-power FM radio station in Two Harbors will have a public meeting Wednesday to talk about the idea.
Some area residents exploring the possibility of starting a low-power FM radio station in Two Harbors will have a public meeting Wednesday to talk about the idea.
In 2010, Congress acted to open more airwaves to local communities for non-commercial cultural and educational broadcasting.
“Licenses have not been offered yet, but now is the time to start planning and recruiting volunteers of all types and talents to make it happen,” said enthusiast Fran Kaliher.
Programming possibilities for such a station are varied and could be tailored and responsive to the community, Kaliher said.
“It could be a platform for local musicians and alternative music, story-telling and poetry-reading, oral history, local natural history and phenology, public safety and emergency response – the list goes on and on,” Kaliher said.
“If you think participation in local community radio could help Two Harbors build cohesion and a sense of identity – or simply that it would be whole lot of fun – come to the exploratory meeting”
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Two Harbors Public Library.
