100 years ago, 1912

A sketch has been submitted for straightening out the curve in the Seventh Avenue viaduct so as to eliminate the danger of collision between passing vehicles. As the roadway now is, there is grave danger of a serious accident at this point owing to the fact that teams or motor cars traveling in either direction cannot see or be seen to prepare for a meeting.

Isle living

Isle Royale boasts that you can get the most pleasure for the least expense when you visit the cottages at the Tourists Home. One or two room cottages, heated when necessary, best of good, clean wholesome meals served in a large dining room, $1.75 per day, $10 per week.

75 years ago, 1937

June 14th is Flag Day. In June 1777, General Washington approved the stars and stripes as our official flag with: “We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white shall go down to posterity, representing Liberty.”

Leave deer alone

Several reports have been received recently of deer being captured on farms and exhibited to curious neighbors. It is against the law to capture deer or keep them in possession without a permit. Permits for possession of deer are issued only to zoos and parks according to the director of the state division of game and fish, A. C. Hanson.

50 years ago, 1962

Two Harbors is tentatively scheduled to be converted to dial telephone service the later part of 1963 according to Ralph John, telephone engineer of the Gopher State Telephone Company. With the dial conversion comes direct dialing.

Back to Norway

At the somewhat advanced age of 82, Mrs. Lisa Mattson, of Beaver Bay, left Sunday to be wafted to her old home area of Norway by trans-Atlantic jet propulsion. Going with Mrs. Mattson are her brother, and grand-niece, grand-nephew and friend. The party expects to be in the old country six weeks.

25 years ago, 1987

Randy Ellestad and Colonel make quite the team parked in front of Carousel Antiques on Seventh Avenue selling popcorn, caramel corn and soft drinks, featuring a special Minnesota-made root beer called 1919 from the bright red replica of an antique popcorn wagon. Of course, Colonel is fiberglass but the popcorn business is real and they catch visitors’ attention as they travel about town.

Twice the turtle

Minnesota Fats, the state record snapping turtle captured in 1986, has been recaptured by Craig Dietrich on the Poplar River in the same location as last year. In 1986, Minnesota Fats weighed in at 62 pounds; this year he weighs in at 64½ pounds.
