State of the study

Results from each of the five study parts will be made public after they are completed, with some later this year and a final, overall report is expected in 2013.

  • Nearly all field research and data collection is complete.

  • Researchers now are analyzing data with some results expected to be made public later this year, the rest in 2013.

  • Study already has confirmed a 300 percent higher rate of mesothelioma on the Iron Range compared to the state’s general population. That number could go higher.

  • Study has revealed that Iron Rangers have a 20 percent higher lung cancer rate and 11 percent more heart disease than the state’s general population.

  • X-rays and health tests given to current and retired taconite workers found 17 percent had reduced lung capacity and 15-17 percent have abnormalities in the tissue surrounding the lung.

  • Study has found few traditional asbestos fibers in mining industry samples and is looking at shorter particles as a potential cause of lung disease.

  • Researchers also are looking at silica as a health concern.
