The Two Harbors girls track team placed second at the Section 7A South Sub-section Meet.
The Agates relied on strong relay teams, hurdlers and four of the top throwers in the section.
Steph McGregor was the Sub-Section champion in shot put and discus. She’s currently 7th on the State Class A Honor Roll in discus.
Her teammates Madison Stroozas, Kaley Peterson and Casey Cross, all placed as well, helping the Agates score a total of 44 points in the two throwing events.
Lacey Myrdal, Krista Keranen, Jessie Juenemann and Leann Fynboh ran the 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relays, placing second in both. They continued a close battle with Esko in the 4-by-100, who edged them out by just a quarter of a second.
Luckily for the Agates, a rule change this year will allow the top two relays to qualify for State at Sections this Friday. In the past, each section has sent only one relay team from each event to State.
Krista Keranen and Lacey Myrdal took home ribbons on their own as well. Keranen won the 200 and Myrdal took second in the 100.
Amanda Anderson and Maddie Wielinski both placed in the 100 hurdles.
Eighth-grader Marina Schreiner took on a heavy load in the distance events, advancing to Sections in both the 1,600 and 3,200. Eighth grader Abigale Seipke also advanced in the 800.
The boys’ team shined in the relays, with all four teams scoring points and qualifying for the State Honor Roll.
Parker Kausch, Jon Horoshak, Micaiah Schubert and Eli Hebl bested their previous team best by 26 seconds to take second place in the 4x800.
Drew Christiansen took third in the 100m with a time of 11.74
Kevin Thewis came through in the hurdling events, placing third in the 300 hurdles and seventh in the 110 hurdles.
The boys were also successful in field events, with Noah Alm and Micky Smith placing fifth and seventh in shot put, Dustin Cavallin placing third in discus, and Shannon Lysaker seventh in high jump.
Overall the boys’ team placed fifth out of 15 teams.
