Letter to the editor: Have a garden to share?

From Mary Hedin

Two Harbors

Are you craving colorful flowers and the smell of the warm earth? Do you know a neighbor who has a fabulous garden? Have you gone past a garden that is so stunning it takes your breath away? Are you dying to know about that shrub peeking out from behind the house in the next block?

The Master Gardeners of Lake County, in cooperation with the University of Minnesota Extension program, are planning their annual summer Mystery Garden Tour and are looking for existing gardens to include in the tour. The public is invited to submit names or addresses of gardens they would like to see included in an upcoming tour. The garden property can be residential or commercial, town or country, but must be within Lake County.

All suggestions will be considered for either this year or a future tour. This is not a competition and referrals will be kept confidential if desired.

To submit a suggestion, contact me at 834-8377 or mary.hedin@co.lake.mn.us or Janet Strand at 220-1059 or walkergirl. janet@gmail.com and be prepared to give the site address or location directions, including your name and phone number as the referral. Suggestions are being accepted through Wednesday.

Garden, yard, or green space sites might include features such as native plantings, butterfly or bird attracting flowers, shade plants, interesting sculptures and garden art, rock and ground cover gardens, use of container plantings in a small space, water features or other garden categories.

The date for this summer’s mystery tour is scheduled for mid- to late-July. Registration information for the tour will be available in June.

Master gardeners provide University research-based answers to your yard and garden questions. To contact them, call the Lake County Extension Office at 834-8377.
