A grand opening event at the newly renovated Agate Bay public access on Lake Superior in downtown Two Harbors will be held June 1 at 2 p.m.
The event, organized by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the city of Two Harbors, is free and open to the public.
The Agate Bay public access was renovated last year. Improvements include a new crib dock for wind protection, improved deep-water boat launching ramps, a dedicated kayak ramp with dock, vault toilets, pedestrian walkways, storm water treatment and a new parking lot. The facility is handicap accessible, including the kayak launch.
The $2 million reconstruction project was funded in part by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Sport Fish Restoration Boat Access Program for Acquisition and Development, along with a 25 percent state match funded with capital bonding dollars approved by the Minnesota Legislature in 2007.
The Lake County Historical Society will offer free guided tours of the nearby lighthouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will provide refreshments.
The Harbor Advisory Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. next Thursday at the Department of Natural Resources Conference Room in Two Harbors.
The committee will review the recommendations for the Small Craft Harbor basin configuration and coal dock.
There will be other project updates announced as well.
