Silver Bay prep baseball report

The Mariners had four games last week. Three were one-run games and one was a five-inning game. They lost 7-6 at home to previously winless McGregor, 10-0 in five at Ely, and 6-5 at Moose Lake, and won 6-5 at home versus Two Harbors. Their current overall record now sits at 3-8.

The Mariners led 6-2 after three innings versus McGregor. The Mercuries scored four times in the fifth to tie it at six and once in the top of the seventh for their first victory of the season. The Mariners took a 4-0 after one inning of play with the benefit of only one hit, a single by Chad Smuk which drove in two runs. McGregor got two in the second, and the Mariners scored one when Jonah Koehler singled in Nathan Bauck. Zack Duresky scored on a Brock LeBlanc single in the third to make it 6-2. The Mercuries responded with four runs on four hits in the fifth after Mariners starter Duresky left with a sore arm. In the seventh McGregor’s Tim Tierney singled to lead off the inning, stole second and reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Chase Hoover reached out and stroked the ball to left field to score Tierney with what proved to be the winning run.

Ben Belz went 3 for 3 and scored twice for McGregor. Alex Carlstrom and Hoover each went 2 for 4. Hoover, a freshman, was the winning pitcher as he went seven innings and gave up six runs on five hits. Daniel Wilson took the loss for the Mariners, giving up one run and three hits in two innings of work. Duresky scored twice for the Mariners and Luke Small had a triple.

The Agate-Mariner rematch was a reversal of the teams’ first game, in which the Mariners took an early lead and lost by one. The Agates led 2-0 after one, 3-2 after two and 5-2 after the top of the third. The Mariners tied it in the bottom of the third and won it with a Luke Small home run in the sixth.

Steve Frikken and Tim Bott scored in the first for the Agates, with RBIs from Bott and Jesse Omtvedt. In the second Frikken drove in Cole Myrdal who had singled with two outs. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the second, and singles from Small and Koehler scored Jordan Fralich and Micheal Klofstad. The Mariners tied it up with a two-out rally in the third. Smuk doubled and scored on a Klofstad single. An Agate error followed by a single from LeBlanc scored Klofstad. Then Small lined one to left to score Bauck and tie the game at five. Each team managed three hits the rest of the way. Sam Strom went the first three innings for the Agates, giving up five runs, and Brandon Zapolski finished the game taking the loss on the solo home run. Duresky went five innings for the Mariners, giving up five runs on seven hits. Wilson pitched the final two innings and picked up the victory.

At Moose Lake the Mariners lost a heartbreaker as the Rebels scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to come away with a 6-5 victory. Wilson had three hits, including two doubles, in the game for the Mariners.
