Editorial: What’s in our name?

Though the name of this paper has been the News-Chronicle for 39 years, it’s been cool or at least parochial to call it the Chronicle.

We’ve done it ourselves, and there’s a reason behind it: One of its forebears was the Two Harbors Chronicle until its merger with the Silver Bay News. (It was also the Iron Trade Journal 100 years ago, but there’s nobody alive to call it that. We think.)

Whatever you’d like to call us, or even curse us, is fine by us. As for ourselves, we’re going to strive to use the full name to reflect our total coverage of Lake County. The rivalry between Two Harbors and Silver Bay since the latter’s inception is hardly a secret. It surfaced this week in the co-op sports agreement between the two cities’ schools, as reported by Emily Haavik on page 1. But it’s not our place to take sides, especially on the news pages.

If there’s an extreme case where one city indulges in not-nice dissing of the other, it might be appropriate for comment on our opinion page. But not in our name. We decided that 39 years ago, and it fits us just fine.
