Mariner softball team undefeated

The Mariner softball team picked up two more victories to improve their overall record to 8-0.They defeated Cook County 13-7 at Grand Marais and beat Ely 10-0 in five innings.
At Grand Marais Shay Viola scored three times and finished two for four at the plate. Taylor Guzzo went three for five with a home run and six RBIs. Kaelyn Lenski went two for four and Phoenix Lillis was two for two with four runs scored. Guzzo got the win giving up three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
At home the Mariners scored three times in the first inning against Ely. They loaded the bases via walks and scored twice on passed balls and wild pitches. Jessica Hipple singled to drive in the third run of the inning. The second inning saw two more runs cross the plate. Katie Smedstad reached base on an error and Brittany Duresky was hit by a pitch. They both came around to score.
In the fourth inning, Smedstad singled and later scored on a single from Lenski to make it 6-0. Then the Mariners scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the ten run rule. Rebecca Dilley and Phoenix Lillis each drew walks to start the inning and Dilley scored on a sacrifice fly by Viola. After Guzzo singled to score Lillis, Marina Carter was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Smedstad then cleared the bases with a double to end the game.
Carter, Smedstad, and Duresky each scored twice in the game. Smedstad was two for three and reached base on all four of her trips to the plate. Viola reached base three times as she went one for one. Guzzo picked the victory and shutout by giving up one hit, an infield single as she faced only 18 batters.
