What has become known as the North Shore road may soon be realized with news from Mr. Chris Murphy, auditor of Cook County, advising that the validity of their $60,000 bond issue had been dismissed from the Supreme court thus assuring the construction.

Back in 1835

An old account book kept by Jacob Reddig, who conducted a general store at Stevens, where he gathered a fortune of $20,000, shows that eggs were sold at 8 cents a dozen, whisky at 12 cents a quart, cigars at 20 cents a hundred, coffee at 16 cents a pound, calico was 30 cents a yard and nails 8 cents a pound.

Friday, June 11 has been set for the graduation exercises which will be held in the high school auditorium for the 95 seniors in the class of ’37. There are 49 girls and 46 boys in this class which is five members less than last year.

High-flying Mr. Rust

C. R. Rust arrived in the city after flying his plane from San Diego to Duluth, coming by way of El Paso, Texas. Mr. Rust, who has spent the past four months in San Diego, has purchased a Waco cabin seaplane.

50 years ago, 1962

Five Two Harbors youths form a combo knows as “The Accidentals,” is one of seven orchestras picked from among 17 to play at a dance Saturday night in the Duluth Armory. The outfit, which has played at several teenage events in the area, is comprised of Curt Johnson, Dave Ojala, Keith Naslund, Skeeter Anderson, and Dan Erno.

R. B. Elliott wound up almost 20 years as president of the Two Harbors Library board of directors but will maintain his close association with the institution he was instrumental in founding. Elliott was one of seven persons in Two Harbors who met on November 27, 1896, to draw up the by-laws preparatory to establishment of the first public library here.

Longtime North Shore fishermen aren’t too worried about new warnings from the state about eating big fish caught in the big lake. The MN Department of Health has warned people not to eat large lake trout – 30 inches or larger – caught in Lake Superior due to their containing too many PCBs. Most people don’t eat the big fish and if they do, they take the precaution of cutting and cooking away fat, where most contaminants concentrate in fish, says Hans Ojard, an avid angler who until recently ran a charter service.
