Marina Carter will be playing for the Minnesota seniors in the CCM National Invitational Tournament, which started yesterday and runs through Sunday at the Plymouth Ice Center. The NIT has a field of five teams playing a round-robin schedule with the top two finishers playing off for the title and the next two playing for third place. The field has the Minnesota seniors, picked from the Senior Classic, the Minnesota under 17 team, and teams from North Dakota, Wisconsin, and the North Plains.

Softball update

The Mariner softball has improved their record to 6-0 with wins over Cromwell, South Ridge, and Floodwood. The Mariners defeated Cromwell 29-0 on the road, South Ridge 17-11 at home, and Floodwood 19-5 on the road. Taylor Guzzo was the winning pitcher against South Ridge and Marina Carter came in to pitch the final three innings to pick up the save. They each went three for four at the plate with Guzzo getting a triple and Carter belting out two doubles. Katie Smedstad had five RBIs which included a double off the fence with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning which scored three. Rebecca Dilley scored three times and had a triple.

At Floodwood Guzzo got the win in the five-inning contest giving up four earned runs on six hits while striking out seven. Shay Viola went three for four, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Marina Carter went four for four with a double and a triple and drove in four runs. Katie Smedstad was three for three with two doubles and three RBIs and Guzzo was two for five with a home run and double. Carter scored four times, Guzzo and Smedstad three times, and Viola twice.

Upcoming events

Both the softball and baseball teams are scheduled to play in Grand Marais today versus Cook County and are scheduled to host Ely on Monday. Tuesday they travel to Two Harbors to play the Agates. The track team is also going to Two Harbors on Tuesday for the Two Harbors Invitational and will be at the Hawk Invitational on Thursday.
