Mariners lose two games in a row

The Mariners baseball team fell to 1-2 for the season as they lost their last two games.

The Mariners baseball team fell to 1-2 for the season as they lost their last two games. They were defeated 15-3 in five innings at home by South Ridge and fell 7-4 to the Floodwood Polar Bears on the road.

The Mariners trailed 7-1 at Floodwood, but battled back for three runs in the last two innings of play. Daniel Wilson gave the Mariners an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a home run over the left field fence. This held up until the third inning when the Polar Bears struck for three runs via three singles and three walks. Jarred Heggedahl supplied the key hit with a two-run single. Three singles in the fourth inning scored two more to make it 5-1. In the fifth, the Polar Bears scored two more when two batters walked and Riley Bernsdorf scored them both with a single.

The Mariners came back with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Chad Smuk drew a walk scored on a Nathan Bauck single in the sixth. Jonah Koehler and Cody Larson drew walks to start the seventh and advanced on a passed ball. Koehler scored on a sacrifice fly from Wilson and Larson scored on a single from Brock Leblanc.

Luke Small reached base four times via a single and three walks and Daniel Wilson had two hits with a homer and double along with two RBIs. Wilson took the loss on the mound giving up five runs in 3 2/3 innings. Jonah Koehler and Zack Duresky finished up. Trevor Bernsdorf went six innings for the Polar Bears allowing two runs and struck out 12 Mariners. Trevor Bernsdorf had three hits and Justin Hall and Ross Schminski each had two for the Polar Bears.

The Mariners actually led 3-2 after one inning versus South Ridge. A Zack Duresky single drove in two runs for the Mariners in the bottom of the first. South Ridge replied with 10 runs in their half of the third to end any doubt in the contest.
