The Two Harbors softball team continues their winning streak, winning games on Thursday, Saturday, and Tuesday.

The Agates were out of town April 12 to play Moose Lake/Willow River. The Agates won 3-0.

“We didn’t get our offense going until the seventh inning,” coach Julie Benson said.

Sasha Fjeran got on base with a walk and Sarah Fjeran moved her into scoring position with a base hit. Madison Olson and Courtney Kimball followed this up with doubles that brought in the three runs.

The Agates had a huge defeat over Ely Saturday at home. Two Harbors won 16-5.

Even bigger than their colossal scoring, the Agates made school history when during the third inning Hailey Clark hit the second home run in fast-pitch softball history at Two Harbors High School. Before Clark hit a grand slam during Saturday’s game, former Agates softball player Katie Sjostrom hit the Agates’ one and only home run in 2007.

“There was no doubt that the ball was going out beyond the fence,” Benson said.

Savannah Juenemann followed up with yet another home run — a line drive over the center field fence — to bring in another two runs. Bats were on fire as Kimball hit yet another grand slam in the fifth inning to end the game 16-5.

“It was a day to remember,” Benson said. “Home runs are rare and grand slams are even rarer. Our hitting was stagnant on Thursday … I was hoping to get the bats going on Saturday and that is exactly what happened in grand style. It was definitely a good day for our program.”

After Monday’s home game against Eveleth-Gilbert was cancelled due to weather, Two Harbors continued their winning — and hitting — streak Tuesday during a home game against Carlton.

The Agates defeated the Bulldogs 10-0, with pitcher Madison Olson throwing a no-hitter.

Carlton’s pitcher struggled in the second inning, and the Agates followed up the walks with some key hits from Sarah Fjeran and Jenny Grignon to put the Agates up by six runs. After a pitching change, the Agates came back with four runs in the fifth inning to win the game 10-0.

“Hitting is contagious,” Benson said. “The seniors came into the season with stronger at bats from all of their hard work in the off-season. The underclassmen are becoming more confident at the plate every day.”

The Agates play again tomorrow at home against Virginia. That game starts at noon.
