The Midwest Peregrine Society examined and banded three peregrine falcon chicks from a nest at Northshore Mining in Silver Bay last Thursday.

Volunteers used ropes to reach the nest, which is located beneath the plant's conveyer system for loading ships. The chicks - two female, one male - were placed in a soft case and lowered to the ground, where volunteers took blood samples and placed bands that will be used to track the birds in the future.

Northshore Mining, which is owned by Cliffs Natural Resources, has been partnering with the Midwest Peregrine Society for more than a decade.
