Library news: April 6

Film series, March Madness winners, and the hottest new titles.

Film series

The Two Harbors Public Library’s international film series continues Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a showing of a documentary about Afghanistan.

What Americans consider frivolous entertainment is downright revolutionary in Afghanistan. The documentary film “Afghan Star” tracks four young finalists—two men and two especially daring women—as they hazard everything and even risk their lives to become the nation’s favorite performer on Afghan Star, their television version of our American Idol. Millions of Afghanis are tuning in — music is freedom and cell-phone voting is democracy. Shown in English, Dari, and Pashto with English subtitles, the film is 88 minutes long. Afghan Star is part of the ongoing Changing Lives, Changing World international film series sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The documentary is intended for adults.

March Madness winners

Sherlock Holmes came out on top as the Cleverest Detective—the original master detective still comes out on top. Harry Potter won for best young people’s series in a close contest with the Hunger Games trilogy. For the Evilest Villain, Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter stories was the winner. Thanks to all who submitted votes.
