Business News: Northshore Mining, Sonju receive awards
Safety award for Northshore Mining
Northshore Mining is the 2011 recipient of Cliffs’ President’s Safety Award. The award was presented earlier this month by Donald Gallagher, executive vice president and global commercial president, and P. Kelly Tompkins, executive vice president of legal, government affairs, and sustainability.
“Safety is our number one core value, and Northshore Mining is an example of that commitment,” said Tompkins. “The camaraderie between employees and dedication to looking out for each other deserves recognition from the highest level.”
Each year, the award is given to the operation with the best safety performance among Cliffs’ operations. Northshore Mining achieved this recognition by ending the year with the lowest percentages in four categories: all injury frequency rate, total severity rate, total reportable incident rate and total lost time incident rate.
“We’re honored to receive this award, and be recognized among so many outstanding Cliffs’ operations,” Northshore Mining General Manager Jim Korpi said. “We have worked diligently to ensure each employee has the tools and knowledge to work in a safe manner . Beyond that training, our employees always take the extra step to do their tasks with caution so that each one of them goes home safely to their families.”
Northshore Mining has received the President’s Safety award 10 times since its inception in 1998.
Overall, the safety performance at all Cliffs Natural Resources’ operations improved 15 percent in 2011.
“We’re proud of the safety improvements made at our operations, but we can do better,” said Tompkins. “Cliffs Natural Resources is on the ‘road to zero,’ and will not rest until we can operate without any injuries to our employees.”
Sonju receives award
Keith McKinzie, president of Sonju Two Harbors, announced the dealership was awarded the 2011 Mark of Excellence by Chevrolet and Buick. These awards recognize Sonju Two Harbors as one of the highest performing auto dealers in the country for 2011.
To achieve this level, Sonju Two Harbors met or exceeded its 2011 Divisional sales, Customer Satisfaction Index, Retail Sales Index, and Essential Branding Elements objectives.
