Catherine “Jane” Stanich, 91, Two Harbors, died March 18, 2012, at Ecumen Scenic Shores.
Jane was born August 21, 1920, to Charles Leslie and Ann (Rafn) McMains in Two Harbors where she graduated from high school. As a young woman Jane worked at the State Theater and the Harbor Theater where she met the man of her dreams, a tall dark, handsome man from out of town. She married Joe Stanich on February 2, 1943. Joe sailed on the ore boats for a number of years and the couple lived in Two Harbors where they started their family and their first daughter, JoAnn, was born. For a short while, they lived in Holland, Mich. where their second daughter, Judi, was born. The family returned to Two Harbors and Jane happily spent the rest of her life in her beloved hometown, Two Harbors.
She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Jane was so much more than a homemaker through the years. She was a rebel rouser and the first to fight against what she thought was an injustice. She was a great gardener and she loved fishing. She enjoyed knitting (especially those baby sweaters) and was famous for her fabulous rye bread and chocolate cookies. If someone needed help, she was always there, sometimes even if they didn’t think or know they needed it. She loved to laugh and joke and most of all she was well known for that twinkle of mischief in her eye. She will be missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joseph in 2006; brothers Charles and Richard McMains; and sisters Shirley Amundsen, Coral Jean Setterl, and Dorothy House. She was the last of the McMains family.
She is survived by her daughters JoAnn (Tom) Merritt of Vadnais Heights, Minn. and Judith Stanich of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Dr. Patrick (AnnMarie) Merritt, Terri Johnson, and Kris Merritt; great-grandchildren Madison, Marisa and MaKenna Merritt, and Carter Johnson; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Cavallin Funeral Home with visitation Sunday, March 25, 2012, from 4-6 p.m. and funeral services on Monday, March 26, 2012, at 11 a.m. and a luncheon at the United Church of Two Harbors. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery.
