Bayside Chatter: PeeWee hockey tournaments start

Both the Silver Bay 12U B girls’ and North Shore PeeWee B boys’ youth hockey teams began state tournament play today.

The girls are at Fairmont and opened play versus Centennial Red, the No. 2 ranked team in the state. Silver Bay, who had been unranked all season, came into state play at No. 8. North Shore is at Hoyt Lakes and opens play versus Buffalo Black who are No. 20 after also being unranked. North Shore has moved up to No. 5.

Mariners basketball

The Mariners boys’ basketball team ended their season with a record of 13-12 after falling 112-92 to Lakeview Christian Academy in the section 7A quarterfinals. This was a team that started the season at 2-9.

All-conference

hockey team

Elizabeth “Biz” Huss was named to the MIAC All Conference hockey team. She led Bethel in scoring with 29 points with 15 goals and 14 assists. She was fourth in scoring in the MIAC, sixth in goals, eighth in assists, and led the MIAC in power play goals with 9.

Hockey tourney

While all four seeded teams advanced on the opening day of play in the boys class A state hockey tournament, zero seeded teams did so in class AA. The private schools prevailed with St.Thomas Academy winning in A and Benilde/St.Margaret’s winning in AA. Hermantown, the top seeded team in A, took second and Duluth East, the top seeded team in AA, won consolation.

The girls’ state basketball tournament opened play this week and will conclude tomorrow. Hopkins is seeded No. 1 in AAAA and Richfield is No. 1 in AAA. In AA and A there are no seedings. Hopkins is favored in AAAA, Richfield and Fergus Falls in AAA, Providence Academy and Braham in AA, and Maranatha Christiuan in A. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in AA is the only remaining unbeaten team.

Softball and baseball

As of right now, the Mariner softball team is scheduled to begin April 3 at Hoyt Lakes versus Mesabi East and April 5 at Mountain Iron plus April 9 at Proctor. The baseball season is scheduled to begin April 10 at home with Carlton and April 13 at home with South Ridge. We’ll have to see how much the weather cooperates.
