The North Shore Good Neighbors group will host a sulfide mining informational session this Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Two Harbors Community Center.
The group has invited several guest speakers to cover various topics concerning sulfide mining. Speakers include:
-Bob and Pat Tammen from Soudan will speak about what sulfide mining is, how it works, and the challenges it presents.
-Nancy Schuldt, (Fond du Lac Water Projects Coordinator) will examine potential for contamination of surface and ground water and the impact it will have on the ecosystem.
-Marc Fink (Sr. Attorney, Public Lands Forest Director, Center for Biological Diversity) addresses the regulatory puzzle: the EIS and how it works, and the status of the state’s review of Polymet, the first sulfide mine proposed to open in Minnesota.
-Virgil Sohm (Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe) shares how tribal sovereignty, land, values, and well-being will be affected by sulfide mining and how Minnesota tribes are responding.
-Julie O’Leary (Assoc. Policy Director of Freshwater Future) will moderate the session, including public discussion.
The North Shore Good Neighbors is a non-partisan group of active citizens from the North Shore of Lake Superior who gather monthly to discuss topics of shared interest. The group will host occasional public informative assemblies — presentations that include opportunity for open discussion of issues of concern. Currently Good Neighbors is exploring possibilities for a local foods expo, discussion of state constitutional amendment initiatives, and a local community radio station. Anyone interested in participating in the group is encouraged to contact northshoregoodneighbors@gmail.com or call Doris at 218-834-2445.
