The Silver Bay 12U girls’ hockey team, made up of players from Silver Bay and Two Harbors, came through the back door and avenged an earlier loss in the Region tournament to win a spot in the state tournament next weekend. A 3-2 victory over International Falls earned them a trip to Fairmont and the state tournament.
The girls opened play Friday afternoon with a 7-3 victory over Long Prairie. Hattie Koehler and Hannah Johnson each scored twice to lead the offense. Callie Klemmer, Brooke McMillen, and Everly Bauck scored the other goals. The girls erupted for four goals in the third period to break a three all tie.
Game two on Saturday saw a tough loss to International Falls by a score of 5-3. International Falls came back from a 3-1 deficit to score the game’s final four goals. Bauck scored all three goals with McMillen getting assists on all three.
Now it was win or go home, and the girls responded with a 5-2 victory over Northern Lakes to advance to play again on Sunday morning, where they still needed two more wins for a trip to state.
In their first game with Roseau, they trailed 5-2 with less than four minutes to play. Bauck scored with 3:04 left to make it 5-3 and with 2:33 left Koehler cut the deficit to one. Silver Bay pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and with 33 seconds to play Koehler struck again to tie the game at five. It looked like it was going to overtime until McMillen scored the game winner with 13 ticks left on the clock. Jesse Ketola and Cora Carter had scored the earlier goals in the contest.
Now it was just their earlier nemesis, International Falls, standing between them and a berth at state. The Falls jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 10:35 mark of period two and once again things looked bleak. Carter from McMillen made it 2-1 entering period three. With 6:51 left on the clock, Ketola tied up. One minute later, it was McMillen from Carter for the game winning goal.
Maureen Dwyer was the net minder in all five games for the team and did a fine job with a record of four wins and one loss.
