The Mariners boys’ hockey team advanced to the section 7A quarterfinals with a 6-3 home victory over the Ely Timberwolves.

The Mariners struck for three first period goals and a lead they would never relinquish. Thomas Anderson ,Luke Small, and Cody Larson scored to give the Mariners their three-goal cushion as they outshot the Wolves 19-5 in the opening period.

Period two was quite different as a more enthused Wolves team outshot the Mariners 16-10 and had Carter Manning score the only goal of the period. After Jonah Koehler restored the Mariners three goal margin 1:12 into the final period, Wes Snyder cut it back to a two goal margin 28 seconds later. Koehler struck again to make it 5-2 with 11:13 left to play. Two minutes later, Nick Matthews made it 5-3 and it remained that way until Anderson scored into an empty with 2 seconds left. Small led the Mariners with four points and Anderson had three. Alex Murray had 33 saves to pick up the win. Cody Bialik had 37 stops for Ely. The Mariners next opponent is number one seed Duluth Marshall.

The Mariners lost 3-1 to the Proctor Rails in their last regular season game of the year. Shane Billings scored the lone Mariner goal with an assist from Larson. Zack Duresky took the loss in the Mariner nets with 28 saves.
