The Mariners girls’ hockey team fell one game short of the state tournament as they lost 3-0 to the Chisago Lakes Wildcats in the section 7A finals at Cloquet.

Megan Lushanko had two goals and an assist to lead the Wildcats offensively. The story of the game however was the play of the Wildcat defense, which kept the Mariners scoreless for the first time this season. They limited the Mariners to nine shots on goal and allowed very little penetration into their defensive zone with control of the puck.

Katherine Johnson and Lushanko scored first period goals at 11:43 and 15:33 to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead after one with a shot advantage of 8-3. The Mariners had the only power play in the first period, but the Wildcats had four of them in period two. This included just over a minute with a 5 on 3 advantage. While the shot advantage was only 7-4 in favor of the Wildcats and the score remained at 2-0 following two periods, the penalty killing took its toll on the Mariners and they simply ran out of gas in the third period.

Lushanko scored the game’s final goal at 9:11 of the third period as they outshot the Mariners 16-2. Cassie Swanson finished up with 28 stops in the Mariner nets and Jamie Dobosenski had 9 saves for the Wildcats.

The Mariners concluded a very successful season with a record of 18 wins and 10 losses.
