Northland's Memorial Day events schedule

Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown will host its annual Memorial Day service on Monday starting at 9 a.m.

The ceremony, titled “Remembering Our Fallen Heroes,” will run from 9 until 10:30 a.m. and include military honors by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard; a flag presentation by the Duluth Sea Cadets Honor Guard; the Duluth Bible Church Patriotic Choir; and several speakers, including Col. Penny Dieryck of the 148th Fighter Wing; Dr. Andrew Chiu from Essentia Health; and Wayne Johnson, who fought in World War II with the Flying Tigers.

The ceremony will be followed by free refreshments from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A large tent will be set up, so events will go on rain or shine.

Sunrise Memorial Park is located at the corner of Miller Trunk Highway and Arrowhead Road.

Brookston

Tester Niemi Post 562 of Brookston will conduct color guard services on Memorial Day at the following cemeteries:

  • Arrowhead at 9 a.m.

  • Perch Lake at 9:25 a.m.

  • St. John’s at 9:45 a.m.

  • Industrial at 10:05 a.m.

  • Independence at 10:25 a.m.

  • Alborn at 10:40 a.m.

  • Indian Hill at 11:05 a.m.

  • Culver at 11:15 a.m.

    Carlton

    Carlton’s Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 will visit the following cemeteries Monday.

  • Eagle Lake at 7:45 a.m.

  • Cromwell at 8:10 a.m.

  • Atkinson at 8:45 a.m.

  • Elim Lutheran at 9:25 a.m.

  • Oak Lake at 9:45 a.m.

  • Nickerson at 10:15 a.m.

  • St. John’s in Wrenshall at 10:55 a.m.

  • Carlton at 11:15 a.m.

    Cloquet

    Cloquet VFW Post 3979, American Legion Post 262, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 and American Ex-Prisoners of War, along with their auxiliaries, will visit the following cemeteries on Monday.

  • Sawyer at 8:15 a.m.

  • St. Mary and Joseph Cemetery at 8:30 a.m.

  • Holy Family Mission at 9 a.m.

  • Maple Grove at 9:15 a.m.

  • New Calvary Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

  • The hill between the old cemeteries above Pinehurst Park at 9:50 a.m.

  • Apostolic Church in Esko at 10:20 a.m.

  • St. Matthew’s at 10:45 a.m.

  • Pine River at 11:05 a.m.

    Cloquet Veterans Park, 11 a.m. Monday. Patriotic music by the Cloquet Community Band, followed by a flag-raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m. The Memorial Day address will be delivered by Chaplain Dennis Morriem of Community Memorial Hospital.

    Duluth and Superior

    The Duluth Honor Guard will make the following visits on Monday.

    East Squad:

  • Park Hill Cemetery at 8:30 a.m.

  • Forest Hill Cemetery at 9 a.m.

  • Calvary Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.

  • Polish Cemetery at 10 a.m.

  • Sunrise Memorial Park at 10:45 a.m.

  • Temple Israel / Maple Grove Cemetery at 11:15 a.m.

    West Squad:

  • Canal Park by Maritime Visitors Center at 8 a.m.

  • Greenwood Cemetery at 8:45 a.m.

  • Union Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

  • Bethany Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.

  • Oneota Cemetery at 11 a.m.

    Memorial service, 5 p.m. Wednesday, at the Korean War Memorial on the Lakewalk near the Pickwick restaurant and near the Vietnam Memorial. This service is sponsored by the B Company Marines and the dedication is in honor of all Korean War veterans and will include the Combined Honor Guard firing a salute, a prayer from a pastor, a bagpiper and singer Mary Rose Varo.     Memorial service and 20th anniversary dedication, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Northland Vietnam Memorial on the Lakewalk. Features former Mayor John Fedo and his wife, Lori, singer Mark Rubin, Mayor Don Ness, bagpipes, wreath-placing, rifle salute and taps. Following the ceremony, gather at Midi Restaurant to hear additional speakers, award-winning essays and Brett Small, combat veteran and songwriter. Call Durbin at (218) 590-3156.

    Silver Bay

    Silver Bay Community Program at Silver Bay Veterans Home, 10:30 a.m., with refreshments to follow.

    Two Harbors

    Two Harbors Community Program, 9:30 a.m. at high school auditorium with patriotic music by the Two Harbors City Band. Formal program starts at 10 a.m. People who are willing are asked to proceed afterward to the Agate Bay boat landing to place floral arrangements on the water in honor of Navy and Coast Guard fallen. Later there will be a gathering at Lakeview Cemetery veterans‘ section flagpole for full military honors and the raising of the flag to full staff.

    At the conclusion of the flag ceremony, a picnic-style luncheon will be served at the American Legion Post in downtown Two Harbors.

    Virginia

    Memorial Day Service, 1 p.m. Monday, Florenton Cemetery, 7449 Highway 169, Virginia. Features Mountain Iron Legion No. 220 Honor Guard.
