John Phillip Arnold, 101, passed away Feb. 8 at Scenic Shores in Two Harbors.
He is survived by one sister, Ethel Madigan of Seattle, Wash.; son Phillip Arnold (Jan O’Donnell) of Two Harbors; daughter Mary Parenteau (Michael) of White Bear Lake; granddaughters Erin, Ellen, Anne, Elizabeth, and Chris; and five great grandchildren.
John was born in Elmore, Minn. and grew up on a dairy farm near Long Prairie. He was a veterinarian, receiving his DVM and MS at Iowa State University and his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota. He practiced at Mora in the 1940’s and joined the faculty at the U of M in 1950 after becoming head of the department of surgery and radiology.
John retired in 1976 and was active in many organizations including serving as president of the MVMA, MN Territorial Pioneers, and the MN Genealogy Society until his mid-90s. He was a life-long Republican whose vote was cheerfully cancelled out each election by his wife of 62 years, Margaret (Crom) who was a lifelong Democrat. Margaret died in 2006.
Known for his determination and dedication to work, John will be well remembered by his colleagues and friends. The family wishes a special thanks to the staff at Ecumen for helping to make his last year and half more pleasant.
