The Silver Bay boys’ hockey team split a pair of games up on the Iron Range last week.
At Ely they prevailed 5-4 in overtime after trailing 4-0 after one. At Coleraine they lost 5-3 as they ran into penalty trouble and skated over a period shorthanded.
At Ely Wes Snyder and Nick Matthews each scored twice to give the Wolves a 4-0 lead 13:07 into the contest. The Mariner’s comeback started 1:21 into period two when Jordan Fralich scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 4-1. Two minutes later, it was Bradley Rowlee from Shane Billings for a power play goal and it was now 4-2. Then came Luke Small from Jonah Koehler and Thomas Anderson and it was 4-3 after two.
The Mariners outshot the Wolves 12-6 in the final period but didn’t get the equalizer until 2:32 remained in regulation play. It was Fralich from Koehler to send the game into overtime. There it was Billings from Small and Fralich to end things with another power play goal at 2:14 of the extra period in favor of the Mariners by a score of 5-4. Alex Murray picked up the victory in the Mariner nets by stopping 21 Timberwolf shots with Zack Duresky stopping 10 more. Cody Bialik had 39 saves for Ely.
This was the third time in three games this season that Silver Bay and Ely have ended up in overtime, with the Mariners taking two of three.
