With a 2-1 victory over the Hibbing Bluejackets in Cloquet Tuesday, Silver Bay advanced to the section 7A championship game. The Mariners face Chisago Lakes Friday at 7 p.m. in Cloquet with a berth at the state tournament at stake.
Cassie Swanson stopped all 16 shots she faced in the third period as the Mariners were outshot 16-5, but scored the only goal. Swanson finished up with a total of 29 saves in probably her best game of the season.
Taylor Guzzo scored the game winner 3:51 into the final period. Shay Viola got the puck up to Anna Carman who fed Guzzo with a cross ice pass. Guzzo promptly put it top shelf into the net with a strong wrist shot. It proved to be very similar to the Mariner’s first goal where it was Viola to Guzzo and then Carman for the goal. The only shot to beat Swanson came at 2:42 of the second when Erin Scovill’s shot went off the pipe, up to the crossbar, and down into the net. The Bluejackets ended up outshooting the Mariners 30-19 overall in the game.
The game started out slowly as it seemed both teams had to adjust to the playing surface. At the seven minute mark of the game, Hibbing had two shots on goal to zero for the Mariners. The Mariners’ first shot came about 9:30 into the contest shortly after Swanson stopped a point blank one timer. Then the Mariners came alive and took the lead with 1:31 left in the first. Hibbing tied it at one in the second and the Mariners won it in the third.
Chisago Lakes came back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to defeat International Falls 4-3 in overtime.
